SITTICHAI SITSONGPEENONG

Biography

Born Anulak Jansuk in Buriam, the northeast region of Thailand also called Isaan, Sittichai Sitsongpeenong began fighting at the age of 11. Sittichai dropped out of school, like many Muay Thai fighters, to pursue a career as a professional boxer. He had completed the ninth grade upon dropping out. Since then he pursued an academic degree with regular weekend classes to gain a high school equivalency degree. His parents at the time worked as small scale laborers and as farmers, typical occupations in the Isaan region.

Fight Career

In 2009 at the age of 17, Sittichai moved to Sitsongpeenong after being scouted by a Petchyindee promotion agent. Signing on with Sitsongpeenong would be huge boost for his career and he began to fight internationally. His first bout internationally was in a 4 Man Tournament for the Nuit des Titans promotion at 63.5kg in 2010. He bested renown French fighter Fabio Pinca by decision and moved on to gain a points victory over Anuwat Kaewsamrit to win the tournament. The following year saw him return to France where he won against Damien Alamos by points on the La Nuit des Champions event in Marselle.

The move to Sitsongpeenong would also see an adjustment in Sittichai’s style of fighting. In Thailand boxers will often concede to each other when one has a clear points advantage of the other. Internationally, however, concessions are not made and fighters are encouraged to fight to the end of the bout. This transition was difficult for Sittichai to make. His manager is quoted as saying, ‘"His mindset before was that when he hurt somebody and the fight was won, he would just leave them alone and back off.” Since then he has increased his work rate and aggression making him a much more versatile boxer.

Sittichai fought at YOKKAO 6 in Pattaya against Wanchalerm Uddonmuang scoring a win by points.

The management of Sitsongpeenong would continue to take Sittichai international and in 2013 Sittichai took on Enriko Gogokhia on the Glory 7 undercard in Milan, Italy. The fight would end in a disputed decision. He continued to fight under Muay Thai rules for several bouts seeing him face Jordan Watson on Max Muay Thai in Zheng China in 2013 and he was able to secure the Lumpinee Stadium Welterweight Championship Title at147 lbs against Maruay Sitjaepond in 2014.

By 2015 Sittichai would begin to focus solely on kickboxing bouts. His debut at kickboxing promotion Glory saw him win the Lightweight Contender Tournament at 70kg at Glory 22. He was able to beat out David Kiria in the second round via TKO and won a points victory over Josh Jauncy in the finals.

The win at the tournament saw him lose a controversial decision against Robin van Roosmalen at Glory 25 later in the year. However, he competed and won again in the Glory Lightweight Contender tournament in early 2016. This second securing of the tournament win saw him rematch Roosmalen in mid 2016. He was able to gain a split decision win over Roosmalen at Glory 31. Sittichai defended his title against Dylan Salvador with a fourth round KO.
