COVID-19 Update: Thailand Boxing Events To Resume in June
The number of new Covid-19 infection cases in Thailand has declined sharply since mid-April, reporting daily single-digit cases for the past 3 weeks. Total COVID-19 cases now stand at 3,040, while 2,921 have recovered. The next phase of lockdown relaxation will kick off on 1st June with more businesses allowed to resume.
The Muay Thai industry is one of many hit by the coronavirus lockdown that began in mid-March. All sporting events were cancelled and then gyms were required to close to flatten the curve.
Last Saturday, 23rd March, the Muay Thai Association in Thailand and the Sports Authority of Thailand held a meeting in view of the improving COVID-19 situation in the country.
It was speculated earlier that boxing events are scheduled to restart on June 15 albeit with some restrictions. The two sports associations have come up with a three-phase plan to resume Muay Thai events in Thailand and is pending final approval from the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA).
Detailed in the three-phase plan, boxing events in Thailand will resume in stage 1 with stadiums closed to the public. In phase 2, limited access is allowed to the public with strict social distancing measures and mandatory face masks. Full normalcy is expected in phase 3. The three phases will be carried out over the next few months subject to the Covid-19 situation.
We expect that Muay Thai camps will be allowed to operate for training next month but remain closed to the public. Stay tuned and stay connected with us on social media for all more COVID-19 updates in the coming weeks.
